Baku City Circuit is a renowned racing track situated in the coastal district of Baku, Azerbaijan. A significant part of the circuit traverses through the historic city of Icherisheher. Since 2016, it has been the regular host for Formula 1 races. The project's inception dates back to 2014 when the Minister of Sports, Azad Rahimov, and the then Formula 1 chief, Bernie Ecclestone, initiated its construction.
To develop this circuit, some of the world's leading architects and track designers were involved, with German architect Hermann Tilke at the helm. HOSTED EVENTS
The circuit regularly hosts stages of two major racing series - F1 and F2. The main street circuit race debuted in 2016, immediately obtaining the status of "European Grand Prix." Since 2017, the event has been named the "Azerbaijan Grand Prix." It is worth noting that F1 races in the capital will continue at least until 2025 (until the contract with FIA expires).
F2 cars also regularly appear on the straight of the Baku circuit. The first winner of this racing series was Monaco's representative - Charles Leclerc. Russian driver Artem Markelov secured the 4th place in his debut race.
FORMULA 1 IN BAKU
The first winner of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix was German driver Nico Rosberg from the Mercedes team. He also won the first qualifying session. Victories were also achieved by Daniel Ricciardo and Lewis Hamilton, while the fastest lap record belongs to Valtteri Bottas. The race is considered the most exciting by both fans and drivers, combining speed and drama.
The 2017 GP was particularly dramatic, with only 13 out of 20 F1 cars reaching the finish line. Kimi Räikkönen, Felipe Massa, Nico Hülkenberg, and Max Verstappen had to retire due to various issues.
